During pregnancy, no amount of alcohol is safe at any time. Alcohol exposure can cause a baby to be born with physical, mental, social, behavioural and learning disabilities that may last throughout their life.

During pregnancy, no amount or form of cannabis is safe at any time. Exposure to cannabis may lead to low birth weight, may harm your child’s brain development and may lead to lifelong cognitive, behavioural and mental health challenges.

What if you already consumed while pregnant?
If you have consumed alcohol or cannabis – knowingly or unknowingly – know that it is never too late to make a change. Stopping or reducing use at any time can reduce the potential impact on your pregnancy and your baby.

Can you use cannabis to help with nausea?
Using cannabis to help with nausea is not recommended during pregnancy. Talk to a health care provider about safer alternatives for treating nausea or other symptoms.

Can you keep using cannabis for medical reasons?
If you are using cannabis for medical or health reasons, it is important to talk to a health care provider about the benefits of using cannabis versus the possible risks to you and your baby.

What if a person has difficulty stopping?
If you have difficulty stopping or reducing alcohol or cannabis use during your pregnancy, we encourage you to talk to your health care provider about services in your community that can support you.
